Woofun AI reports that investor optimism for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing drove a sharp rally in Bitcoin mining companies, triggered by major infrastructure announcements from Hut 8 and IREN.
The market reaction was immediate, with Cipher Digital, CleanSpark, MARA Holdings, Hut 8, and IREN each gaining at least 11% in early Monday trading. This surge followed Hut 8’s disclosure of a 15-year, $9.8 billion lease for its AI data center campus and IREN’s announcement of $2.8 billion in cloud services contracts with AI developers. Both entities, originally Bitcoin (BTC) miners, are accelerating their pivot toward AI infrastructure as mining economics weaken; IREN now projects its AI cloud business will generate over $4 billion in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026.
Broader indices reflected this momentum, with The Energy Mag’s TEM AI Infrastructure Growth Index, which tracks 20 companies across Bitcoin mining, neocloud, and AI infrastructure, rising 1.4% on Monday and climbing more than 12% over the past week. This performance coincided with a wider tech recovery, as the Nasdaq Composite Index added 0.9% by midday.
Notably, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, a key gauge for chipmakers powering the AI boom, climbed 2% after entering a technical bear market last week, defined as a decline of 20% or more from its recent high.
Structurally, the Bitcoin mining environment has seen sharp volatility as firms pivot to AI, a shift that Blocksbridge Consulting notes has driven a sector re-rating but also intensified investor scrutiny over insider stock sales. Per Woofun AI, a recent Miner Weekly newsletter highlighted transactions at TeraWulf, Riot Platforms, Core Scientific, and Cipher Mining that have drawn attention. Although these sales were executed under prearranged trading plans, they have fueled questions regarding whether AI-driven enthusiasm inflated share prices sufficiently for executives to cash out.
The transition requires substantial investment, with much more capital still needed to sustain the shift. Blocksbridge estimates the industry will require another $50 billion to realize its AI ambitions, with IREN facing the largest funding gap at roughly $21.1 billion. This marks a critical juncture where operational pivots must align with massive liquidity requirements.
