AI developer Anthropic officially released the first public iteration of its advanced Claude Mythos model, designated Fable 5, on Tuesday, sparking immediate concern within the cryptocurrency sector regarding potential malicious applications despite the inclusion of embedded safety protocols. The company previously disclosed that the Mythos architecture identified over 10,000 high or critical-severity vulnerabilities in systemically important software, a statistic that fueled skepticism about the wisdom of a public launch. Anthropic asserted that Fable 5 is engineered for general safety, featuring guardrails that automatically divert sensitive queries, particularly those related to cybersecurity, to a separate model known as Claude Opus 4.8. The firm acknowledged that deploying a model of this magnitude carries inherent risks, noting that without these specific safeguards, the capabilities of Fable 5 in cybersecurity domains could be weaponized to inflict severe damage.
These assurances have failed to fully alleviate anxiety among crypto participants, especially as artificial intelligence is increasingly implicated in attacks against digital asset platforms. Data compiled by Woofun AI indicates that the total value of cryptocurrency stolen in hacks during April reached $629.7 million, marking the highest monthly figure since February 2025, a trend analysts have directly correlated with the deployment of advanced AI technologies. Simon Dedic, founder of the venture firm Moonrock Capital, highlighted the severity of the situation on X, stating that the arrival of Fable 5 will drive the cost and skill threshold required to discover exploitable flaws in smart contracts down to essentially zero. He warned that this development serves as a critical wake-up call for decentralized finance, predicting that unaudited protocols will become vulnerable targets and that known exploits will be relentlessly replayed on forked chains around the clock.
Dedic further emphasized that even small-scale projects face heightened risks because the marginal cost of attempting an attack has plummeted to negligible levels. In response to these threats, he reiterated calls for defensive measures, advising crypto users to revoke wallet approvals, withdraw maximum value from existing protocols, and migrate assets to fresh hardware wallets to mitigate exposure. Conversely, Michael Egorov, co-founder of Curve Finance, argued that the perceived threat level posed by Claude Mythos to the crypto ecosystem may be exaggerated. Egorov suggested that the model's success in identifying bugs in traditional software does not necessarily translate to the ability to uncover vulnerabilities in smart contracts governing DeFi applications.
In May, Anthropic reported that Claude Mythos, operating under Project Glasswing, uncovered thousands of critical vulnerabilities across essential software infrastructure. For open-source projects, which form the backbone of crypto protocol management, Mythos detected approximately 6,200 high or critical-severity vulnerabilities within more than 1,000 investigated projects. Egorov countered the alarmist narrative by pointing out a fundamental difference in code complexity; the software scrutinized by Mythos contained millions of lines of code, whereas smart contracts typically consist of only a few thousand. He posited that both human auditors and standard AI models are well-suited to contextualize and reason effectively within the smaller scope of smart contract code. Woofun AI notes that Egorov suspects the industry will not witness a wave of direct DeFi code hacks, but rather an increase in operational security breaches, such as multisig key compromises, and supply chain attacks targeting frontend dependencies, which he deems less dangerous to the core integrity of true DeFi systems.
Despite the public release of Fable 5 with its restrictive guardrails, Anthropic confirmed that a select group of cybersecurity and infrastructure providers will receive access to Claude Mythos 5. This version utilizes the same underlying model as Fable 5 but operates with safeguards lifted in specific areas to facilitate dee. The divergence between the public and restricted versions underscores the delicate balance between leveraging AI for defensive security improvements and preventing its misuse for offensive exploitation. As the industry grapples with these new capabilities, the tension between technological advancement and systemic risk remains a focal point for strategic planning and risk management across the digital asset landscape.
