a16z Co-founders Urge CLARITY Act Passage for Stable Crypto Asset Regulation
Andreessen Horowitz leaders advocate for the CLARITY Act to define SEC/CFTC roles and separate centralized from decentralized token rules, aiming to prevent regulatory uncertainty from driving innovation offshore.
Woofun AI reports that Marc Andreessen and Chris Dixon, co-founders of Andreessen Horowitz, recently outlined their positions on cryptocurrency regulation in an interview. Andreessen argued that cryptography has matured from an early-stage technology into a robust industry, necessitating a stable U.S. regulatory framework to support responsible business practices and avoid collapses akin to FTX. He warned that imposing excessive liability on developers for open-source software misuse would stifle innovation, comparing it to how lifting HTTPS restrictions enabled U.S. e-commerce leadership.
Dixon observed that cryptocurrency has evolved from a subculture into financial infrastructure, with stablecoins facilitating near-instant global transfers rivaling Visa in volume. While stablecoin adoption increased following the GENIUS Act, the broader market still lacks federal oversight. Both founders stated that the CLARITY Act could clarify SEC and CFTC jurisdictions, distinguish regulations for centralized versus decentralized tokens, and provide long-term certainty for developers. They concluded that expanding developer liability would damage the open-source ecosystem and that persistent regulatory ambiguity might push innovation to other jurisdictions.
