Woofun AI reports that a fraudulent 'VLAD' memecoin promotion appeared on the X account of Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev on Thursday, indicating a successful compromise by hackers. The post contained what appeared to be a malicious token contract address linked to the fake asset. This incident highlights the vulnerability of high-profile executive accounts to social engineering attacks.
The scam post rapidly accumulated more than 175,000 views in less than 20 minutes before community users identified the deception. Onchain Lens flagged the compromise, prompting immediate warnings against interacting with the token. The speed of dissemination demonstrates the heightened risk associated with unverified social media endorsements in crypto markets.
Structurally, the scam exploited Robinhood’s recent aggressive expansion into digital assets, including tokenized stocks, crypto staking, and perpetual futures. Although the company operates Robinhood Chain, it has never launched a memecoin, rendering the 'VLAD' token entirely illegitimate.
Woofun AI data shows that Robinhood Chain’s blockchain explorer has since labeled the token’s contract address as a scam.
This event occurs amid a broader shift in attack vectors, with attackers are increasingly favoring phishing campaigns. Despite this evolution in tactics, the total value stolen through crypto scams has declined in recent months. The targeting of executive accounts remains a critical vector for fraud, even as overall theft volumes recede.
