The digital asset treasury (DAT) sector is undergoing a decisive strategic realignment as the initial frenzy of coin accumulation gives way to operational necessity. In the first quarter of 2026, Metaplanet, the largest Bitcoin treasury entity in Japan and Asia, adjusted its capital strategy by halting equity dilution when its market value fell below its net asset value. Instead of issuing new shares, the firm pivoted to Bitcoin-backed financing and stock buybacks to stabilize its valuation. While the Q1 financial report indicated the purchase of 5075 BTC, the company's focus shifted in Q2 toward acquiring Siiibo Securities, a licensed Japanese firm, to drive Bitcoin-backed asset bond products and explore security tokenization. This move signals a broader industry trend where even Strategy, previously committed to a 'never sell' policy, engaged in limited Bitcoin sales to bolster cash reserves, effectively transforming its supply guarantee into a variable total supply model. Woofun AI notes that as the second-largest Bitcoin reserve holder struggles, the viability of the passive holding model for other DAT entities is increasingly under scrutiny.
The market correction has forced many DAT companies to exit the model entirely or pivot to core business operations. ETHZilla, backed by Peter Thiel and holding over 90,000 ETH at its 2025 peak, sold $115 million worth of ETH twice by year-end to repay debts before abandoning the DAT model for RWA tokenization. Similarly, Bitcoin DAT firms like Prenetics Global and Sequans Communications have returned to their traditional core businesses, while numerous meme coin treasury companies with near-zero stock valuations have ceased operations. Data compiled by Woofun AI shows a stark contraction in capital deployment, with DAT companies purchasing approximately $20 billion in cryptocurrency in July 2025 compared to only $3.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026. This stagnation in the flywheel effect has compelled surviving treasury companies to transition from passive asset managers to active ecosystem participants to generate genuine commercial value.
The first strategic vector involves repositioning as institutional-grade crypto asset management platforms and yield funds. SharpLink Gaming exemplifies this path by allocating nearly 100% of its ETH holdings to staking, distributing all rewards to shareholders without retaining a cut. This approach contrasts sharply with spot ETH ETFs, which, despite SEC approval for staking, can only stake about 50% of holdings to maintain daily liquidity. In early 2026, SharpLink partnered with Galaxy Digital to launch the $125 million 'Galaxy Sharplink On-Chain Yield Fund,' deploying around $100 million of staked ETH into DeFi liquidity protocols to capture excess returns. This evolution marks a shift from a simple holding company to a management platform providing on-chain yield allocation channels for institutional clients.
GameSquare, holding approximately 15,000 ETH, adopts a more aggressive stance by leveraging advanced algorithmic strategies. The publicly listed gaming asset firm partnered with Dialectic to integrate the Medici platform, which utilizes machine learning models to dynamically allocate funds across 72 to 250 different DeFi protocols. The objective is to achieve an annualized return of 8% to 14%, significantly outperforming Ethereum's standard 3% to 4% staking benchmark. These initiatives demonstrate a clear divergence from passive holding, as companies seek to build operational barriers through technological advantages and deep integration into on-chain financial ecosystems.
The second strategic direction focuses on transforming into blockchain infrastructure operators, a trend particularly evident within the Solana ecosystem. DeFi Development has not only accumulated SOL but also acquired validator firms to launch its own liquidity staking token, dfdvSOL. This token is integrated into core Solana DeFi protocols including Kamino, Orca, Drift, and Jupiter Lend, serving as collateral and liquidity pool assets. By earning fee revenue from every staking operation and protocol integration, the company builds a self-reinforcing network effect loop. Woofun AI analysis suggests that this infrastructure-heavy model aligns closely with the logic of traditional publicly listed companies presenting financial reports to showcase value, capitalizing on Solana's crypto-native nature.
SOL Strategies has further solidified this infrastructure play by acquiring three validator companies to manage delegated staking of over 3.4 million SOL, a figure far exceeding its own treasury size. This allows the firm to transition from serving its own balance sheet to providing staking infrastructure for institutional clients across the ecosystem.
Concurrently, Forward Industries launched the fwdSOL liquidity staking token and partnered with Galaxy Digital and Jump Crypto to create the propAMM project BisonFi. Shortly after launch, BisonFi became the highest-volume DEX on Solana, reducing the market share of the previously dominant HumidiFi to less than 4%. These developments highlight the capital market's differentiated attitudes toward Ethereum as an asset class and Solana as an operational ecosystem.
The collective transformation of DAT companies reflects a profound cognitive upgrade within the crypto industry, moving away from the financial engineering pioneered by Strategy that relied on public market financing and investor sentiment for capital arbitrage. As the participant base expanded from a few pioneers to hundreds of companies across Bitcoin and various altcoins, scarcity was diluted, and the premium on DAT stocks naturally evaporated. The launch of cryptocurrency ETFs further accelerated this process; when investors can purchase ETH ETFs with staking rewards at near net asset value through traditional brokerage accounts, the rationale for holding DAT stocks at a premium is fundamentally undermined. Successful transformation cases now rely on operational capability, whether through SharpLink's 100% staking strategy, DeFi Development's validator network, or GameSquare's machine learning-driven revenue platform.
However, these strategic pivots are not without significant risk. The 8% to 14% DeFi yields pursued by GameSquare are built on smart contract and protocol risks, where any major vulnerability or market extreme event could result in severe losses. Similarly, the business model of DeFi Development is highly dependent on the healthy development of the Solana network, meaning any ecosystem cooling would significantly impact its operations. For the Web 3.0 market, this transition from capital frenzy to sober restructuring is a necessary growing pain. Entities that truly participate in network building, create actual cash flow, and provide user value are proving more resilient to market cycles, bridging the gap between traditional finance and the blockchain ecosystem while driving the maturity of institutional-grade services.
