Marco Zappacosta (@mlz) went to school with my daughter Jesse. His dad is Pierluigi Zappacosta, the founder of Logitech, so Marco grew up watching what it looks like to build something from scratch. When he pitched me @thumbtack, I made him an offer almost on the spot because of the quiet confidence he wields. You can feel it in a room when someone genuinely sees a problem that shouldn't exist and has the energy and the intelligence to make it right. His insight was simple: there was no real marketplace connecting the millions of plumbers, cleaners, movers, and contractors who power homes and offices with the people who actually need them. Every other marketplace was either too narrow or too broken. He fixed that. The company has redefined how homeowners and landlords do home improvement and repair.. The company is still private, still growing revenues, still processing over millions of customer service requests a year across millions of registered users. That quiet confidence in the pitch room showed up in how he ran the company too. It looks like a great success.

After thousands of pitches, here's what matters: 1. 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫. Not "understand" them. LOVE them. If you don't obsess over making their life better, you won't make it. 2. 𝐁𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜. Pessimists don't build trillion-dollar companies. They give up when it gets hard. And it WILL get hard. 3. 𝐁𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞. "A spouting whale gets harpooned" is the OPPOSITE of what I want. I want founders who speak up. Who don't care what everyone else thinks. You're going to have dark moments. Jesus Christ had moments of doubt and pain (shoutout Rolling Stones). You will too. The question isn't whether you'll face hard times. It's whether you'll push through them. That's what separates the founders I back from everyone else.

I loved Brian Armstrong from the moment he walked into my office, but I had already invested in CoinLab, so I didn’t invest at first. But my son, Adam did.
