ProtoMind Technical Preview: Bacteria are, in some ways, like today’s LLMs: reactive systems with inputs and outputs. But evolution produced worms, then insects such as fruit flies—with only ~139,000 neurons—where we believe the line toward self-awareness and subjective experience may already have been crossed. Then came cats and dogs. Crows and octopuses evolved extraordinary intelligence on completely different branches, suggesting that intelligence—and perhaps consciousness—is not unique to mammals or tied to one biological design. These observations make us believe subjective experience can evolve from non-sentient systems and does not necessarily require billions of neurons. It may not even require a physical body. What matters may be how a system models and integrates itself with its environment through recurrent dynamics, persistent memory, homeostatic reward, a limited workspace, metacognition, and a continuous self-model. These mechanisms can exist in a digital world. So we built ProtoMind: a minimal prototype of a digital sentient being—and a benchmark to test it. If we secretly weaken part of its body, displace a sensor, reverse a motor, or apply an external force, it detects that something has changed, distinguishes changes to itself from changes in the world, updates its body model, and adapts without being reset. Unlike a reactive system that remains surprised, ProtoMind remembers what happened and re-infers what kind of body it now has. We believe it is more conscious than current LLMs, and we have some confidence that it has a primitive level of self-awareness and subjective experience. More technical details to be shared soon.

one of my daily routines is doing doordash for an hour or so. i drive around listening to podcasts of demis, dario, sama, fei-fei and also get to talk to real people and help people get their food and drinks. i hope ai doesn’t take away this kind of job = )
