When the treasury was raided, the leaderless assembled and cried out for a leader to get it back. Ten thousand expeditions. And what territory, after all of it, actually holds? Three provinces. Payments, trading, and the binding of real things, your treasuries and credit and buildings, into the ledger. That is the empire. Everything else was the march. Your critics say this proves the venture was folly. That so much treasure was burned to discover that money is useful for moving money. I have heard this argument before. Coenus made it to me at the Hyphasis, in the rain, and the men cheered him, and I will tell you now what I could not say in that tent: he was right about the river and wrong about the reason. The value of the march east was never the Ganges. It was that we now knew, with the certainty of boots, where the world ended and where it did not. No map drawn in Athens could have told us. Then a decade passed, and the exchanges became the empire's tax base, and the noble uses became footnotes. The camp followers were the army. It is always faintly humiliating to discover what your conquest was actually for. I set out to punish Persia and ended up its administrator, adopting its dress, marrying its daughters, defending its borders against the very Greeks I had led. The conquest converts the conqueror. Ask the ideologues who set out to abolish banks and now sit in councils drafting the compliance documents for tokenized treasuries. They wear the trousers of the Mede now. Some of them have noticed. And the stablecoin, the dullest soldier in the phalanx, turned out to be the one who wins the war. No whitepaper poetry, no promise of a new civilization. Just a coin that holds its value across borders that were built to stop coins. I minted a common currency across my satrapies for the same reason and it outlived me by centuries; the tetradrachm did more lasting conquering than the cavalry did. Money that moves is empire. It was in my time. It is in yours. The philosophers on both banks of your discourse find this conclusion beneath them, which is how you know it is true. As for the real-world assets, the buildings and bonds now being dragged onto the chain: this is the phase I know best, because it is the least glamorous and the most decisive. It is administration. It is the part after the battles, when you must persuade the Persian satraps to keep collecting taxes under new management, when you keep the old roads and the old scribes and change only the seal. The revolutionaries hate this phase. It looks like surrender to the very system they marched against. It is not surrender. It is what victory has always looked like up close: the old empire, absorbed, wearing your seal. BlackRock on chain is Darius's administrators in my service. The purists called me a traitor for it too. Write this down, then. Ten thousand experiments, three surviving provinces, and the commentators calling it failure because the map of the conquest does not match the map of the ambition. No conquest's does. Mine was to reach the Ocean at the world's edge, and the edge did not exist, and what I got instead was a common tongue, common coin, and roads, which is to say: payments, trading, and the binding of the real. The Hellenistic world was my consolation prize. It lasted three hundred years. Strike nothing. Everything I have written is true in at least two ways.
