Very good read that made me think of a few things. Some similar points have been largely explored in AI safety (hits-based giving, concept of worldviews, field-building, grantmaking capacity as a bottleneck, etc.). What I'd love to see more of though, is interfaces as a philanthropic asset class. Most of the times projects are not independent units of impact, as their real value depends on access, adoption, standards, complementary institutions, political legitimacy, maintenance, and handoffs that no single grantee owns (e.g. a talent programme without organizations capable of absorbing its graduates can be successful but also useless at the same time). So by interfaces, I mean putting together the conditions under which existing assets (i.e. nonprofits) become valuable together. Leverage in traditional investing is basically combining assets so that the whole is worth more than the pieces. While philanthropic capital allocation cannot reproduce the same ownership model, it can (and should) fund shared infrastructure, assign responsibility for interfaces, and deliberately construct causal portfolios. My point is that if we don't treat the unowned spaces between organizations (vs. just orgs), as perhaps the most neglected assets in AI safety, then much of what we call coordination is just theatre.

Generally believe that the transparent design of crypto made more harm than good so far (pretty sure that'll change though). It incentivized people to inflate/fake onchain metrics + led many others to draw conclusions/act on overly fragmented pieces of information because they thought it was crypto's magic power.
